A pillar box is…?

Pillar Box outside our flatA pillar box is a free standing post box found in the United Kingdom. They were first used in 1852 and were an imitation of a device used in Paris described as a “letter receiving pillar”.

The standard colour is red, which is so iconic that the particular shade is often called “pillar box red” in paints etc… They are a fantastic piece of design, like the red telephone box  and the red double decker buses in London. If I had it my way I’d spend my days riding my bicycle (which is not red but green), writing letters and posting them in pillar boxes.

Also in pillar box trivia today…Danger mouse and penfold cartoon lived in a pillar box. Penfold is the name of a texagonal style of mailbox. Sadly, they didn’t live in that style of box in the show…irony or laziness?

I always wondered what the Manic Panic hair dye called Pillarbox Red, which I use frequently, was named after. I wondered why anyone would need a box to store pillars in!

    I love your blog
Where did you live in Pennsylvania when you were here?
I once was married to an Englishman and hoped to move to England but alas, we only visited a lot, mostly to Manchester but sometimes London. A wonderful place to live, to be.
