Pastel Beach Huts

Living in England has forced me to appreciate beaches out of season…in fact I don’t like beaches here in the summer because they are usually packed, and yet the water is still too cold! Nowadays I’ll take a good old gray beach on a winter or autumnal morning anyday. Last weekend we were visiting family out of town, and went for a brisk stroll along the beach on Mersea Island. I’d never been there before despite its close proximity to Colchester (where I lived for 2 years), and was excited to see the beach was lined with these fabulously quaint pastel beach huts which are perfectly maintained. David’s Uncle owns one (it’s pink!) and was there to show us the full benefits of having a little room on the beach, with a hot steaming cup of tea.

Really lovely, quieting photos. I remember being in Blackpool, years ago, on business. Not exactly a chic spot. Nonetheless, the boardwalk (for all its rambunctious carnival atmosphere) still gave me the sense of calm from the beach and waters, as well as the hustle-bustle of life, from the amusements and arcades alongside. Thanks for touching on this memory.

This reminds me of the cabana my grandmother used to own in Rockaway Beach, here in the states.
I noticed a tighter crop of your image on the Freshly Pressed wordpress page. Those shots are amazing. The repetitiveness and seemingly infinite progression of huts really draws me to the pictures. Awesome job!

The dogs are banned in the summer, and there is nothing better than taking the dogs for a walk on an english winters day

I agree, winter on the beach is the best! Oregon has fabulous storms, eventful beachcoming, refreshing weather. No pastel beach huts, but some vintage cabins for sure

I had a good search around and it doesn’t seem like they are for rental, just for owning sadly (or happily if you are the person owning one!) You can check out this website for the island which has local news

I’ve seen little huts around various parts of the English coastline, and I’m sure somewhere they are for rental…but having said that the mersea island ones are the most well manicured and prettily coloured I think I’ve seen.

I’ve been at beaches during the winter in various places. Northern and Southern California, Cape Cod, the Devon coast, the San Francisco Bay area. It’s the best time of year for beaches. Quiet. Busy birds and gulls. Rough tides.

Do you live in England, or have you visited? I’m glad to hear others appreciate it for the great place it truly is (despite what the news has you believe!)
I live in the wild western town of Taos, New Mexico (after having spent 30 years in Los Angeles). But I have visited England numerous times and was an Anglophile from childhood, when I used to cut out pictures of Big Ben and bobbies and such and paste them in a scrapbook. The first time I went to London (in the ’80s) I came into Victoria Station from the airport, and sat on my suitcase and cried because I couldn’t believe I was finally there. And, I’m sure not coincidentally, I’ve had a number of British boyfriends.
Anyway, I also appreciated your post because it is true that beach towns in the off-season can be beautiful and haunting and peaceful. The last ten years I was in L.A. I lived in Venice, five blocks from the beach. I loved taking walks down there when the tourists were all gone. Your photos of the little huts wonderfully capture that lovely feeling of an empty beachside.

Yep, they are glorified sheds…this is true. In fact you could go down to B& Q or Lowes and buy a regular garden shed and paint it pastel and there you go…but getting about 99 lined up is probably more dramatic. Is your yard that big?

nice pictures. I think beach huts are interesting to picture to, with a line of them in all different colours and with all different names but I like these as I have never seen such a long row with them all being pastel coloured.

Utterly otherworldly. Splash in some more theatrical hues and maybe an out-of-place cactus or magnolia tree and you’d have Tarsem Singh’s next dreamscape.
