I’d like to tell you a story…

July 24, 2009

This seems to be a bit of an old story, but not something I’ve come across so maybe you haven’t as well. A few months ago Penguin Books launched a digital storytelling microsite called “we tell stories” in partnership with a reality game designers, Six to Start. They had six authors create stories specifically designed for the internet, and released them one week at a time. They are all currently online and all take on a completely different format despite their delivery method all being the same–a webpage. One story is based around Google Maps, and involves the reader as they track the adventures around the world. Another story  is a beautiful display of statistics and quotes revolving around the digital age that we are in at the moment (see images), and yet another is a bit of a make your own adventure, that allows you to name characters, choose plot lines to create a short story in real time.

we live online

As I work as an interactive designer, creating online only magazines that take the best parts of editorial and the best parts of a website, whether its e commerce, video or community interaction, I find this of particular interest. I like when people use the delivery method but aren’t constrained by it (like just creating a straight story that could just as easily be a news article). BUT, if this doesn’t tickle your fancy, some of the pictures are really perty…
